This morning, the Communications Secretary to Prince Harry released a statement on his relationship with Meghan Markle which wasn’t done to satisfy public curiosity, but to condemn the “abuse,” “harassment,” and “racial undertones” of comments made about the biracial actress’s relationship with the royal prince. The notice states that just a few months into their relationship “Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her.” This is due to the aforementioned probes by the paparazzi and tabloids into her life and that of her friends, family, co-workers, and even exes.
The purpose of the statement, which the prince asked to be issued, is to encourage the press to “pause and reflect before any further damage is done.” We can’t help but think the “unusual” nature of this issuance was influenced by the death of the 32 year old’s mother, Princess Diana. The 36-year-old Princess of Wales died in a car crash in 1997 while being chased by the paparazzi. Though the driver of Princess Diana’s car, who also died at the scene, was eventually deemed responsible for the accident, having lost control of the car as a result of being drunk, the behavior Markle is being subjected to still puts her in harm’s way. Hopefully the media will hear the prince’s plea.
