Just because you’re the one ending things does not mean you have it all figured out. Breaking up with a guy you had a real relationship with is never easy. But if you want to avoid confusion and all sort of childish drama, you should follow these four rules.
1. Make a decision
If you’re thinking about breaking up with a guy, you have to first be sure this is what you want. Don’t use this as some tool to get him to behave the way you want or break up in hopes that he will beg you and stroke your ego. You should know why you’re doing this, what you stand to gain and how you intend to move forward without him. Be ready to say goodbye for real.
2. Have the conversation
There are women who resort to ghosting a guy when they are done. This means the woman will simply stop calling, texting, etc and just assume the guy will get the message. Not only is this rude, it’s immature and manipulative. If you’re done, be woman enough to tell him that. If you’d rather not deal with a face-to-face confrontation, then have a phone call and make your position clear.
3. Give a reason only if you have a good one
Don’t resort to the ‘it’s not you, it’s me’ cliche because you feel you owe him a reason. If you have a good, strong reason like something he did or didn’t do that’s causing you to end it, you can choose to mention it. Or choose not to because, really, the ‘why’ doesn’t matter as long as your decision is made. This is is not the time to be accusatory or mean. If you’re done, then just be done and move on.

4. Cut all contact
This is perhaps the most important rule. Don’t fall into the ‘we can just be friends’ trap. It never ends well. There’s no possibility of friendship with an ex at least until enough time has passed that you’ve both over each other. Your next move after breaking up with a guy will be to cut all contact with him. Not only will this help you move on, it will also be the best thing for him as well
